Rivals in the City A Mary Quinn Mystery Y S Lee Books Reviews
I loved the first 3 books in the series. In fact I read all of them the day they each arrived in the mail. I was hesitant about this book as the series was meant to only be a trilogy.
This book takes places a little while after the last one. Mary is now an independent woman with enough money to live comfortably and James is the ever understanding man she is to marry. This book focuses mainly on Mary who is keeping an eye on the Thorold household members as the daughter (from A Spy in the House) returns but along the way Mary meets someone who will be very important to her life.
This book just did not engage me as the previous ones did. It took several sittings to finally (and that's how it felt...finally) reach the end. I found the characters one dimensional; Mary was annoying and self-absorbed; James was actually boring. The dialogue lacked the banter that had made the relationship between Mary and James so enjoyable to read. I found that the plot about the bank, the Thorold's and James/Mary didn't gel together - just different bits put together.
Sadly, for me the series ended with Traitor in the Tunnel - this book is just a big disappointment.
super good book but you need to read the other books first!
This was a great adventure! I hope this isn't the last one!
