Chasing Graves The Chasing Graves Trilogy Ben Galley 9780993517044 Books

Castro Basalt has the worst luck. From the start of his story, his situation goes from bad to worse and still manages a continuous downward slide. He’s not the most likable sort of fellow, but not really a bad sort. As lockpicks go, he’s one of the best in the business. Yes, he’s a thief, and times are tough, so when an opportunity comes his way to take a job offered from the seat of the king at the Cloudpiecer in the sprawling city of Araxes, he takes it a ship and sets sail.
Thus begins the series of unfortunate events which is Chasing Graves. Here is where we discover the hellish existence of being dead but alive, a shade and a bound slave. Ben Galley has a gift for finding the humanity within the inhuman, and showing the inhumanity in abundance in mankind. A highly immersive dark fantasy with a fantastically imagined premise.
With detailed characters, a twisting plot, and a heavy dose of gory darkness, Ben Galley has once again produced a fantasy you can sink your teeth into. Or not, after all, the book is chock full of corpses. I enjoyed this very much and am looking forward to what the future holds for Castro Basalt in book 2, Grim Solace.

Interesting ideas and unique characters. Looking forward to exploring this world more in the subsequent books.

A great read! I have enjoyed all of Mr. Galley's books, he is a wonderful author. I love how he develops his characters and the story that he tells in his books. I found myself wanted to know more about Anoish (a horse!).I know there is something more going on with said mare. I would highly recommend this book . You never can go wrong with a Ben Galley books, seriously a great read.
It may be the triggering of a pet peeve that's left an unpleasant impression upon finishing the book, but it just doesn't really go anywhere on its own.
The setting has some interesting implications and plays with them toward the darker. Caltro has some character appeal. On the other hand, Nilith's story felt unnecessarily repetitive and not terribly relevant to anything until the very end of the book. In many ways, this feels more like the first chapter of a story than the first book - it has no real climax or arc of its own, instead just setting up the situations for the narrative to work from.
If you don't mind that lack of progress, it'll probably rate higher.
I went into this book with no preconceived ideas, and found myself dragged along for one hell of a Dark Fantasy ride!
Very possibly some of the greatest, cleverest, and most unique world building that I've read in a long time. Plus, one hell of an opening scene a great way to kick off a story.
It was a bit slower but I might like, though there was a steady progression, without the Epic climax I was looking forward to. But I loved how the stories all intersected by the end of this book, even the one that I had no idea how it would relate.
This book is sure to be a hit! I honestly had trouble putting it down. I ended up barreling through it just to find out how it turned out.
One thing I especially liked was that the characters stayed true to who they were. Caltro didn't just drop his normal behavior and become a hero. This is what many books like that do. They instantly go into hero mode when it does not at all fit who they were before.
There are two other main protagonists, the Empress in waiting Sisine and a mysterious woman called Nilith. I won't go intotheir characters because it would be too hard to avoid spoilers.
All in all, this book was refreshingly unique and I'm eager to see what happens in book two.
Caltro Basalt has arrived at the port of Araxes. He’s ready to report for the job offer he’s received, a call from someone at the royal palace for his services as a locksmith (or more accurately, a thief). Yet, the ship captain’s tardiness has put the passengers on land a bit after sundown, and the gangs of soul stealers are out in force… Basalt doesn’t make it a couple blocks before being chased down and killed, brought back to the Boss Temsa’s shade factory, and dipped in Nyxwater to bind his life-force forever. A process that creates an entire economy of indentured workers at the heart of Galley’s beautifully-shaped world.

Now Basalt will have to find a way to navigate the world a half-life, a slave to his master and the copper whip. He can sit and stew or maybe find a means to combat his situation.

With points of view from all rungs of the social ladder, Galley builds his world with great skill. Details of the soul economy, the dress and customs of the City of Countless Souls, and the language and beasts of every culture finding its way to this metropolis make for a complexly-drawn experience. Told through the eyes of the newly-minted shade Basalt, the shademaster Temsa, and many others, the plot includes powerful manipulations of both individual characters and all the peoples of Araxes.

Galley has created a first book with a rising plot arc, one that has in no way reached its climax, but has placed all the pieces ready for a rollicking second book. A couple shocking reveals in the final pages of Chasing Graves create much anticipation for Grim Solace, Chasing Graves #2.
