The King Slayer The Witch Hunter Virginia Boecker Books

I believed that I would give The King's Slayer a lower rating on account of the difficult time I had with it at the beginning. I did not do a reread, which I usually don't these days when it comes to continuing a trilogy/series. It's usually really easy to get back into them though if the author does their job well. Now I'm not saying Boecker didn't do her job well, but there is something to be said about how difficult it was. I've also noticed others discussing this problem as well. Where there is smoke, there's a fire.

Elizabeth as a main character is very believable. Fresh from the events of book one, The Witch Hunter, we see her much more vulnerable. She saved John's life by giving him her stigma, the source of all her power. Technically no longer a witch, Elizabeth is forced to use her wits and hand-to-hand combat skills to navigate herself out of some sticky and dangerous situations. It was refreshing to see and it showed growth.

Blackwell's hunger for power is as ravenous as ever. His last encounter with Elizabeth has left him terrible scarred and disfigured, and his power is waning. He must get Elizabeth's stigma and the sword of Azroth in order to gain the power he needs. I loved how dark Blackwell was and also how vulnerable he winded up becoming. I also really liked the use of the Revenants, reanimated people who once died through the use of dark magic.

I won't give the details away, but it was great to see a particular Revenant. However, I did not like how the story ended with that character. It kind of felt like Boecker just pushed the character aside quickly, like she didn't know what to do with the storyline.

The action is intense, and there's quite a bit new characters. The Order, those who have powers and are against Blackwell, were very interesting to meet. However, it's the build up between John and Elizabeth that sold this book for me. Due to the stigma being on John now, which was an extension of Blackwell's power, John must contend with the darkness from the stigma, same as Elizabeth did. Although she had years to train, John did not. This made things complicated for our lovers, and I found the hurdle believable and interesting.

While I still give The King's Slayer 5 stars, I was really thrown for a loop thinking this was a trilogy, when it turned out to be a duology. The realization of this came too late in my opinion, which made me feel a bit unsure of everything at the end. It was a GREAT ending though, so I can't complain about that.

The King's Slayer is violent and unapologetic with it's graphic content, has a heroine who is fierce, candor, and struggles to find out who she really is on the chess board of what we call life. She is tried and tested, and discovers new heights to her abilities, not her magic ones, and sees the great lengths her friends are willing to go to save her and the world. Go out and pick up book one The Witch Hunter and book two The King's Slayer. You won't regret reading this duology.

The King Slayer The Witch Hunter Virginia Boecker Books Reviews

Product showed up in a timely manner and was as described
I read The Witch Hunter and LOVED IT! So far in the first chapter and it's captured my attention. Received the books earlier than expected, in time to send to my twin sister in Colorado!
Thank you Virginia Boecker for finishing this tale in two books! Although I loved the storyline and the characters, you knew when to wrap it all up in a satisfying ending. Too many authors today stretch every story into three volumes or an 11-book series. The Witch Hunter books are well-written, and I look forward to reading more from this author.
I really loved this short series. It was entertaining from beginning to end and the story just flowed. There wasn't too much boring background on characters and overly descriptive scenes. It was enough to keep it interesting. I haven't finished a series this quickly in a long time and haven't read a book during the day to finish it since Twilight. I'm a 'before bedtime' reader. I hope this author writes many more books. I would LOVE to read about John's perspective throughout the series. Especially since we were cheated out of that from Midnight Sun.
Book #86 Read in 2016
The King Slayer by Virginia Boecker

This book is a sequel to The Witch Hunter, a YA historical/paranormal book. Elizabeth is still after evil magician Blackwell but without her stigma to protect her she is vulnerable and mortal. John and she are still trying to figure out their romance. Add a war and overthrowing a king to the mix and you have an action-packed read. This book picks up right where the first book leaves off and ends in a way that it could be the end and it could have more to come. A good read, I recommend it for both girls and boys in high school and adults.
THE KING SLAYER did not suffer from any type of second book slump/syndrome. In fact, I may have liked it more than the first. I wish there were more coming.
Things of note
A major character is absent nearly the entire book, only to come back for a few sentences here and there. It greatly annoyed me. If the character wasn't of any use, the character shouldn't have come back.
Two main characters in this story were (almost) completely new. A few minor/side characters were introduced late in the second half of the book. I found both of these things to be bold choices on the author's part, but they didn't taint the book in any way.
Having fallen in love with Virginia's first book, Witch hunter and also the little "novelette", I had high hopes for this book. Would Elizabeth and John's love survive? Would the story and characters hold my interest and keep it? The answer is/was yes. To be honest, I was worried, having read other series, where that doesn't happen. Of course this is book 2 and I'm not sure if there is a book 3. There was enough action, deceit, tragedy, heartache and love. Actually there was too much heart ache for me....but I made it through those rough chapters....kleenex box never leaving my side! Loved the out lying characters, especially Schuyler..never a dull moment.

Well done Virginia! I hope there's a third book on the way!
